Why shouldn’t we save passwords in chrome or any browser?

The Problem:  Many business owners don’t realise the risk staff take by storing passwords in web browsers like Google Chrome.

Most employees probably use Chrome as their default browser—it’s fast, convenient, and syncs with their Google account. But did you know that storing passwords in Chrome puts your business data at serious risk?

Here’s why: when your staff saves passwords in Chrome, they are typically tied to a personal Google account so when they sign into that account on another device—like a home laptop or mobile phone—all of their saved work passwords can be accessed on that device too.  While this may seem convenient, it opens the door for anyone with access to their Google account to view or use those passwords.

That includes hackers, who might steal Google credentials through phishing or malware or it could even be a friend or family member who borrows the device and snoops in the Chrome settings.  In some cases, they might install a password manager to export all saved credentials, making it easy to access business-critical platforms like HMRC, email, cloud storage, your CRM, and more.

This creates a serious risk of data theft, account lockouts, and leaves you exposed to potentially damaging consequences and why we shouldn’t save passwords in Chrome or any browser.

The solution:  Stop storing passwords in Chrome.  Instead use a dedicated password manager.
